The Inside Edge
Where I take you behind-the-scenes of this week’s @SkatingPj Podcast.
Over the weekend, I was invited to come and watch the Ice Dance Elite’s exhibition. My friend and CBC colleague and I go way back and I mean way back so when she mentioned it at work last week – I was all in. As is always the case for me, I love watching skating and I don’t always get the chance to watch without the distraction of having to make sure that I am keeping all of my eyes on all of the things going on. This was one of those glorious times.
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier were among the skaters. I was looking forward to seeing them because I knew they would be doing their ‘Perry Mason’ free dance – at least that’s what I thought they would be doing. Turns out I had a surprise in store. It seems like Piper and Paul made the decision after Skate America to go with a new free dance and those of us in the audience got the chance to see it.
Bond. James Bond. Complete with a Bond girl. This free dance packs a punch. It makes a bold statement especially since they were able to keep many of the elements that I found so intriguing in their free dance from the first half of the season.
In this podcast, I ask Piper and Paul how they came to make the decision, how they settled on the music and just what it takes to re-invent yourselves halfway through the season. I am the first person with whom they are talking on the record and I think you will be as interested in what they say as I am.

In this case, in light of Piper and Paul’s switch to new Bond-inspired characters, I thought it would be fun to look back at another one of their character programs. Their Hitchcock program from Worlds in 2014. Click on the image below to check it out.
