The Inside Edge is where I take you behind-the-scenes of the @SkatingPj Podcast. This week it’s all about planning. I always think I will have more time and I don’t know why because it never works out that way. Backstage at the recent World Figure Skating Championships, I was scrambling to get from the hotel to the rink and back again to happily cover all of the skating action for CBC Sports.

In my down time, of which there was very little, I wondered if I might be able to catch the attention of some skating types for the @SkatingPj podcast. Enter Canadian ice dancers Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier who had finished their part of the competition a few days before. I have known Piper and Paul since the beginning of their partnership and am very fond of the people they are as much as I am a fan of their skating.

As I passed their coach Carol Lane in the hallway at the rink, I asked her to please pass on the message that I would be interested in talking to them about what comes next. I wondered what comes first in terms of creating the next season’s programs.

So – at basically the moment that the 2015/2016 season ends – I talk to Piper and Paul about their creative process and the timetable that goes with it. It was something I wanted to explore given the fact that these two are among those leading the charge in terms of innovation on the ice. If you want to know more about this dynamic duo – follow them on Twitter @pipergilles and @PaulDPoirier.

The Outside Edge is where I highlight videos from across the skating world and bring you a little bonus from somewhere on YouTube or beyond. For this week, I thought I’d bring something to you that you may or may not have already seen. In an effort to get to know Piper and Paul better, this is a short interview that I recorded at Ice Dance Elite home rink at the Scarborough Ice Galaxy just before this year’s Canadian National Figure Skating Championships. Since the podcast this week is about planning – I wanted to share what they were thinking halfway through the season.
