The Inside Edge is where I take you behind-the-scenes of the @SkatingPj Podcast. This week it’s all about being behind-the-scenes.
Barb MacDonald and I have known each other for a long time through skating. What you don’t know is that we have developed a friendship over the years that goes beyond the rink boards and includes other sports. Barb has worked on projects in over a dozen different sports.
Figure skating is what we are here for and as the former Director of Corporate Communication for Skate Canada, Barb has had to know her way around skating, skaters and the people who cover them. In our conversation we cover the ins and the outs of wrangling skaters and the media at the highest level. With the recent ISU World Figure Skating and World Synchronized Skating Championship events, I thought this was the perfect time to talk to someone who has seen it all.
Barb’s many talents include making sure that the Media Rooms are set up and the press operations run smoothly. At a high level event, the press needs a place to work as well as access to the athletes and Barb made sure that all of that rolled out perfectly.
In this episode, we talk a lot in broad strokes about what goes into making a successful event. Don’t worry, we also talk a lot about being at the Olympic Games and the experiences associated with that. Her professionalism has earned her several awards including the Master Communicator Award from the International Association of Business Communicators.
The Outside Edge is where I highlight videos from across the skating world and bring you a little bonus from somewhere on YouTube or beyond. For this Outside Edge, I thought it would be fun to combine the amazing skating of 2010 Olympic Champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir at what must have been the busiest domestic event on the Canadian figure skating calendar – the Canadian Figure Skating Championships.
